If you’re a NDIS participant, support coordinator or carer, you may have heard about recent changes to how NDIS funding is released. Starting 19 May 2025, the NDIA is introducing new funding periods to help participants better manage their budgets, and we’re here to break it down for you.
How NDIS Funding Is Changing in 2025
Previously, most participants received their full funding at the start of their plan, usually for a 12-month period. While this gave flexibility, it also made budgeting difficult for many, increasing the risk of overspending or running out of funds too early.
Now, the NDIA is gradually rolling out shorter funding periods, typically every three months, for new and reassessed plans.
Why NDIS Funding Periods Matter
These changes are designed to:
- Make budgeting easier by releasing funds in smaller, more manageable amounts.
- Encourage consistent use of support throughout the plan.
- Reduce financial stress and the risk of running out of funds too soon.
Importantly, your total funding amount won’t change, just how and when it becomes available.
What to Expect with New NDIS Funding Periods
- You’ll only be affected once you receive a new or reassessed plan.
- Funding periods will be discussed with you during your planning meeting.
- The NDIA will consider your preferences, risks of overspending, and any vulnerabilities when setting your funding schedule.
- These periods may apply to your entire plan or specific support categories.
How Plan Manage Assist Supports NDIS Participants
At Plan Manage Assist, we’re already supporting participants through this transition by:
- Explaining your funding periods clearly so you know what’s available and when.
- Tracking your budgets and helping you plan ahead.
