Your NDIS plan is one of the most personal documents you own. It contains information about your disability, goals, support needs, personal circumstances, and funding. While some providers may ask to see your plan, that doesn’t mean everyone involved in your supports should have access to it.

The most important thing to remember is that you have the right to control who sees your NDIS information and how much they see. The NDIS allows participants to choose which providers can access their plan and what sections they can view.

Your NDIS Plan Contains Sensitive Information

Many participants don’t realise how much personal information is included in their plan. It may contain:

  • Details about your disability
  • Personal goals and aspirations
  • Reports from therapists and specialists
  • Information about your daily challenges
  • Funding budgets and support arrangements

This information is private and should not be shared simply because a provider asks for it.

Not Every Provider Needs Your Entire Plan

A common mistake participants make is giving every provider a copy of their full NDIS plan.

In most cases, providers only need information that is directly relevant to the support they are delivering. For example, a gardening provider does not need access to detailed therapy reports, personal goals unrelated to their service, or information about every funded support in your plan.

Sharing your entire plan when it isn’t necessary can reduce your privacy and control over your information.

Who Should Have Access?

Generally, it may be appropriate to share relevant parts of your plan with:

  • Your Plan Manager
  • Your Support Coordinator
  • Your Recovery Coach
  • Allied health professionals involved in your supports
  • A trusted nominee, family member, or advocate who helps manage your NDIS plan

These people often require access to plan information to coordinate supports, manage budgets, or help you achieve your goals.

Be Careful About Giving Full Access

Before sharing your plan, ask:

  • Why does this provider need the information?
  • What specific part of my plan are they requesting?
  • Can I provide only the relevant section instead?
  • How will my information be stored and protected?

Remember, saying “no” to sharing your full plan is your right. You can choose to provide only the information required for a provider to deliver a service effectively.

Privacy Matters

The NDIS and registered providers have obligations under privacy laws to protect participant information. However, the best protection starts with participants being careful about who they give access to in the first place.

The more people who have access to your plan, the less control you have over your personal information. That’s why it’s important to think carefully before sharing it.

Final Thoughts

Your NDIS plan is not a document that should automatically be handed to every provider you work with. While some trusted professionals such as Plan Managers, Support Coordinators, and therapists may need access to relevant information, many providers only need limited details about the support they are delivering.

A good rule is simple: share your NDIS plan on a need-to-know basis. If someone doesn’t need the information to provide your support, they don’t need access to your plan. This helps protect your privacy, maintain your choice and control, and ensure your personal information remains in the right hands
